Zombie dolls 600

The Zombie Farm Rag Dolls, have been making evil cute since 2005, creating old fashioned dolls in the form of twisted zombie creatures. Think Raggedy Ann and Andy after a zombie outbreak.

The Zombie Farm, which was founded by Susan Neice Surcy, is a home/web based business located in Dallas, NC, where they make one of a kind handcrafted zombie dolls. They also make miniature zombie doll key chains, created by Zombie Queen Susan.

These dolls are cute yet have a creepy look that may not be suitable for young children.
We make dolls you love to fear!

Susan will be in attendance at the third annual Modern Film Fest, held at the Gem Theatre in Kannapolis, NC. She will be a part of the festival's Idiot Circle Zombie Walk, which takes place before the screening of the comedy/horror movie, "The Mole Man of Belmont Avenue," which features Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund.

Zombie Queen Susan talked to Modern Film Fest recently and discussed her process of making these cute zombie dolls.

MODERN FILM FEST: How did you come across the idea of creating these dolls?:
SUSAN: "I think I was destined to make creepy things. As a small child my dad read murder mysteries to me instead of fairy tales."

"Back in 2005 my daughter wanted me to make her a rag doll. She is morbid like me so I knew I couldn’t make her a regular doll. I made her a creepy doll. It was a sad creation but I knew I could improve on the design. Many failures later I made the first zombie doll I was happy with."

MFF: How have the zombie rag dolls been received and how has demand increased since you started?
SUSAN: "I was afraid people might be offended or think the dolls were too creepy. But when I started taking the zombies out in public, people would look at them and just get these big smiles on their face."

"When I first started selling them I would maybe sell two or three a month. Now I can’t make them fast enough. I get more orders than I can handle sometimes. But the zombie doll fans are patient, great people who don’t mind waiting."

MFF: "What made you choose zombies as a design to base your dolls on?"
SUSAN: "I have loved the idea of zombies since watching, 'The Serpent and the Rainbow,' when I was young. So I thought, ‘A doll that could possibly eat your brains when you hugged them? That would be so cool!'"

MFF: What do you enjoy about making the rag dolls?
SUSAN: "I think I most enjoy the challenge of making each one different. While some may have similar clothes, their faces and scars are different. I also love how it creeps people out when I’m in public and carry on a conversation with one of the zombie dolls."

MFF: What has been your favorite doll you created and why?
SUSAN: "That’s like asking a mother which child does she love more... you can’t choose. Each one is my favorite. But I must say, 'Bloody Mary' and 'Ivanna Munchu' were the two hardest to part with."

MFF: Why do you think zombies seem to becoming more and more popular and going into the main stream?
SUSAN: "It’s what I call the ‘safe’ fear factor. You can sit and watch a great zombie movie, scared out of your wits but you know it will never happen in real life. Now you can dress like a zombie, join a group of other zombies and walk around scaring the heck out of people. So it’s just plain fun."

MFF: What markets do you target for your rag dolls and what do you look to expand into?
SUSAN: "I don’t target a certain type of person. I just put the zombies out into the public eye and wait for the zombies to lure their victims. That makes it sound easy doesn’t it? It’s not, when you use social networks and craft sites like Etsy. You have to really work it. There is no one to advertise for you."

"Some days I would spend hours online getting the zombies out there and into the public eye. I have made great friends and contacts that way. But I have learned if you believe in your product, than people will believe in you. I hope to one day have my own work shop, where people are free to visit and enjoy Halloween all year round."

MFF: What are the price ranges on the dolls?
SUSAN: "The small keychain dolls are $5, The others range in price from 25 to 40 depending on how any heads, arms and legs they have."

MFF: How long does it take to make each doll?
SUSAN: "Anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the detail and size."

MFF: What is your "Day job" and how hard has it been to juggle your regular work with making the dolls?
SUSAN: "My day job is a shipper/receiver for a print company. The people at the company are awesome, they really are my biggest fans. Between work and the zombies, sometimes I don’t get much sleep. Most of the zombie making happens late at night when most people are asleep. I feel like a mad scientist working in secret. I always put my day job first. Right now it’s what pays the bills. I’m at the point where I have too many orders to fill but I can’t make enough zombies on my own to earn enough money to do it full time."
